Over the past decade, Vietnam has achieved universal health coverage with more than 93% of its population enrolled in social health insurance, while simultaneously expanding its private healthcare sector to meet rising demand from an increasingly affluent middle class. Vietnam’s medical device market, valued at over USD 1.6 billion in 2022, is projected to grow at double-digit rates as both public hospitals and private providers invest in modern diagnostic equipment, surgical robotics, and precision medicine platforms. Domestic startups are entering the field as well, developing wearable devices for chronic disease monitoring and mobile-first health applications for rural populations. This ecosystem is supported by a young, digitally literate workforce, Vietnam graduates more than 50,000 engineers annually and a growing network of innovation hubs in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

Artificial intelligence and data driven care are expected to be the critical differentiators. Hospitals such as Bach Mai and Cho Ray are experimenting with AI assisted radiology to improve speed and accuracy in cancer detection, while Vietnamese researchers are participating in international genomic studies to build precision medicine capabilities. With the government targeting a domestic AI economy of USD 2 billion by 2030, healthcare is expected to capture a significant portion of this growth. The integration of genomic data, predictive analytics and AI based triage into mainstream care could enable Vietnam to leapfrog traditional infrastructure constraints and position itself at the forefront of high tech medicine in the region.

Equally important is the development of cross border healthcare technology partnerships. Vietnam is actively collaborating with ASEAN neighbors to build regional telehealth platforms, expand health data interoperability and standardize regulatory frameworks for digital medical devices. These partnerships not only increase access to international markets but also reinforce Vietnam’s role as a connector in Asia’s healthcare technology ecosystem.

The implications of Vietnam’s trajectory are considerable. By anchoring its healthcare strategy in technology development, the country has the potential to deliver outcomes at scale, improve efficiency and reduce inequities between urban and rural populations. It can also attract foreign investment into biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and health tech startups, creating a multiplier effect across the economy. Most critically, this transformation will redefine Vietnam’s brand in the global health market from an emerging healthcare provider to Asia’s next medical powerhouse, distinguished by its ability to integrate technology into every dimension of care.
